Centrally located on the Newell Highway halfway between Melbourne and Brisbane, 4.5 hours north west of Sydney, Gilgandra township has excellent facilities, including 9 motels, 3 caravan parks and ample dining venues. The town is a service centre for the vast rural area as well as the busy Newell Highway.
The township comprises about 2700 people with just under 5000 in the shire. The Gilgandra Shire has several villages with the largest of these being Tooraweenah which is set in the Foothills of the Warrumbungle National Park. The shire has rich history including being the starting place of the famous 1915 Coo-ee March
The Shire has a diverse landscape ranging from open plains, to forest, to the Warrumbungle National Park in the north.
